Postage and freight costs are usually not captured as a separate line item in the purchase price of supplies. Because of this, it difficult for hospitals to isolate what they are actually paying in postage freight. Many organizations do not pursue a cost savings strategy for postage and freight making it prime for opportunities.

Materials management should strive to break down freight costs so that they can be isolated and identified within the supply chain. Identifying freight costs can enable a hospital to negotiate improved freight terms and reduce handling charges with top vendors.
