Physician support
From HMCwiki
Physician support and critical data analysis is required to fully realize most operational improvement initiatives. Physicians should be included in discussions about savings opportunities; clinical staff have valuable input and their participation will help facilitate buy-in.
Addressing supply costs
Neglecting to involve physicians in initial discussions about reducing the number of vendors on high dollar physician preferred items (e.g. orthopedic implants) can have large negative repercussions.
Efforts to standardize and substitute items can lead to significant savings in an organization's supply chain. One way to involve physicians is through Value Analysis Committees where clinical and nonclinical departments can approve standardization initiatives and new product introductions. Another way to encourage physician support and buy-in is through physician gainsharing.
